Fiona the Hippo is Getting Her Own Book!

Written by the director of the Cincinnati ZooSaving Fiona is a book about the baby hippo’s fight for survival!

Born nearly two months prematurely on Jan. 24, 2017, Fiona weighed just 29 pounds- less than half the normal birth weight of a hippo!

The new book, written by zoo director Thane Maynard, is titled Saving Fiona: Science, Social Media, and the Story of a Baby Hippo and will cover her surprise birth, the struggle to save her when she wasn’t growing or eating properly, and the remarkable achievements she has made since- including the recent reunion with her entire family!

Family which has ties to SpringMO!

Fiona’s dad is none other than former Dickerson Park Zoo resident Henry the Hippo.

Maynard says money raised from the book and other Fiona-related products – everything from beer to ice cream to playing cards –helps alleviate the costs of Fiona’s care.

Of writing the book Maynard says, “Telling Fiona’s story is a great way to get people of all ages interested in wildlife and conservation. People do get inspired by individual animals.”

Just to give you an update on Fiona’s dad Henry, unfortunately he’s not doing too great.

A recent Facebook post from the Cincinnati Zoo indicates Henry is lethargic, has no appetite, and “his care team is working hard to diagnose and treat whatever is ailing him. Please send your positive thoughts and prayers Henry’s way.”

Henry was moved to the Cincinnati Zoo in June 2016 to be closer to his family.
