July 21, 1865 was when the famous shootout took place on the downtown Springfield square.

You’ve probably walked past or driven over the historic marker on the square, perhaps without even knowing it!

When I first moved to Springfield and was Googling Ozarks history, this is one of the first stories that came up. I believe it’s the “first documented quick draw duel” and it happened 156 years ago today!

The City of Springfield website has more information, such as Coroner J.T. Brown’s report here.

How cool to have this bit of Wild West history right in our own backyard! Have you seen the historical marker downtown?
