Jimmy Kimmel credits 'Barbie' for his return as Oscars host

ABC/Jeff Lipsky

Three-time Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel reveals the movie Barbie convinced him to return for a fourth go-round.

The host of ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! tells the Los Angeles Times in an interview published on Tuesday, February 20, that after hosting the awards show in 2017, 2018 and 2023, he wasn’t sure he would “ever” do it again.

“I did two of them, and they went well -- something crazy happened at one of them with a story I’ll have for the rest of my life,” he joked, referring to La La Land accidentally being announced as the Best Picture winner instead of Moonlight at the 2017 telecast.

Then, says Kimmel, "I am sitting in a movie theater watching Barbie and thinking, ‘Well, maybe I’ll do this again, because at least I have a point of reference with everyone.’”

Kimmel recently reunited three Barbie cast members -- Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera and Kate McKinnon -- for an Oscars promo inspired by the film.

Only three people have hosted the Oscars more times than Kimmel. Bob Hope did it 19 times, Billy Crystal nine, and Johnny Carson five times.

As for how he found himself in such esteemed company, Kimmel tells the outlet, “So much of my life makes no sense, I’ve stopped trying to make sense of it.”

In Brief: Emma Stone to re-team with 'Poor Things' director, and more

A new trailer for Civil War, the new action drama from Ex Machina writer/director Alex Garland, was revealed on Tuesday, February 20. The film, set in the not-too-distant future, depicts a U.S. where 19 states -- including unlikely allies Texas and California -- have seceded from the union. The remaining states are ruled by a tyrannical three-term president -- played by Nick Offerman -- who orders the military to stamp out the rebellion. Civil War, also starring Kirsten Dunst, opens April 12 ...

Emma Stone, an Oscar nominee for her performance in Poor Things, is in talks to reteam with director Yorgos Lanthimos for his remake of the Korean comedy Save the Green Planet, according to Variety. The film, set to start shooting in the U.K. this summer, follows "a disillusioned young man who captures and tortures a businessman whom he believes to be part of an alien invasion," per the outlet. "A battle of wits ensues between the captor, his devoted girlfriend, the businessman and a private detective" ...

Paramount Pictures has tapped The Goldbergs director and executive producer David Katzenberg to helm Sam and Victor's Day Off, a followup to the beloved 1986 comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The spinoff film centers on Sam and Victor, the two valets from the original film who take the Ferrari belonging to the father of Alan Ruck’s character, Cameron Frye, for a joyride. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, which starred Matthew Broderick in the title role, grossed $70 million in its theatrical run ...

Speculation begins about who’ll star in Sam Mendes’ Beatles films

ABC

Now that it’s been announced that Sam Mendes will direct four separate movies about The Beatles — one for each band member — the speculation about who'll play Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr has begun.

Variety has offered up some of suggestions, including Daisy Jones & The Six’s Sam Claflin as Lennon. Its other Lennon suggestions include Heartstopper’s Kit ConnorAaron Taylor-Johnson, who played Lennon in 2009's Nowhere Boy; and Love & Mercy's Paul Dano.

Jacob Elordi, who played Elvis Presley in Priscilla, is one of its picks for McCartney. Other suggestions include Billy Elliott's Jamie Bell, although the publication notes that at 37 he could be too old; and Tom Holland, although it points out his Spider-Man schedule could get in the way.

For Harrison, it offers up Timothée Chalamet — although with him already playing Bob Dylan in an upcoming movie, Variety says that could be "one too many trips through the counterculture" for the actor. Other picks for Harrison include Sex Education’s Asa Butterfield and even Harrison’s son, 45-year-old Dhani Harrison, although it questions his age and whether he can act.

Saltburn’s Barry Keoghan and Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe are suggested for Starr, although it also mentions Daniel Day-Lewis to play the drummer, even though it notes he’s too old and already retired from acting.

Of course, it isn’t just Variety offering up suggestions. Vulture has a couple, as well, including Harry Styles as McCartney and Masters of the Air actor Callum Turner as Lennon.

Mendes' planned films mark the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and The Beatles have granted a studio the rights to the life stories of band members and their legendary catalog of music. The films are due out in 2027.

Em Beihold on new headlining tour, surprising connection with Noah Kahan

Lissy Raricchia

Em Beihold's first headlining tour kicked off February 20, but a few days before that, she told ABC Audio how headlining will be a big change from her previous tours opening for artists like Lewis Capaldi.

"I feel like it's always been sort of, 'OK, I have 30 minutes to fit all my songs and a little bit of talking,' but this time ... I've actually talked to my band about like, 'How do we loosen this up?'" she said.

"I want to be silly. We're going to be talking more ... it's going to be more fun," she predicted. She also promises special guests and new songs. "When you play the set so many times, just adding some new energy is very special," she noted.

Em, whose hit "Numb Little Bug" and her new track "Maybe Life Is Good" both mention mental health issues, is also making that a component of the tour: One dollar from each ticket will go to Active Minds, an organization that brings attention to mental health, especially on college campuses.

There's no word yet on who Em's special guests will be, but she'd be thrilled if a certain artist who attended her first live performance several years ago made an appearance: Noah Kahan.

"I was freaking out. This was also before everything was going crazy for him," Em said. "He came to my show at The Hotel Cafe and then we wrote together the next day."

"He's just such a special, incredible person and so inspiring to me," she said of Noah. "I'm honored to be anywhere near his orbit."

So, is she sending him tickets?

"Uh, I'm assuming he's busy ... but I should," she laughed.

The Kid LAROI documentary coming to Prime Video

Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic

You may be a fan of The Kid LAROI's music, but how much do you know about his background? It's an interesting story and it'll all play out in a new documentary coming to Prime Video.

Deadline reports that the doc, Kids Are Growing Up, will hit the streaming platform on February 29. It'll show how the artist, born Charlton Howard, went from an Australian teen from an often-struggling family to a world-famous pop star in only three years.

The doc began filming before LAROI really broke through with the song "Stay," and details how he navigated his fame while preparing for his debut album and world tour. It will also touch on how the death of his mentor, Juice WRLD, impacted him, and feature interviews with Justin Bieber and Post Malone.

Sydney Sweeney to host 'Saturday Night Live' as Mark Ruffalo says he'll "never" host

Steve Granitz/FilmMagic - Amy Sussman/WireImage

Saturday Night Live announced on Tuesday that Madame Web and Anyone but You star Sydney Sweeney will be making her debut on the long-running sketch show on March 2.

Her musical guest will be Kacey Musgraves.

Meanwhile, one person you won't see hosting SNL is Mark Ruffalo, at least according to the Poor Things actor.

He told Marc Maron's WTF podcast on Monday that he turned down Lorne Michaels once, and for that reason, "I'll never be asked back."

Ruffalo blamed his dyslexia — and the show's reliance on cue cards — as the reason the prospect of hosting "scared the living s***" out of him. "I've been watching that my whole life and like, I don't want to be the guy, the host who sucks. I owe Lorne Michaels more than that," he said.

On February 24, SNL's host will be Shane Gillis, who was fired from the sketch show in 2019 before he even took the stage at Studio 8H after some offensive stand-up made headlines. 21 Savage will be the musical guest.

On March 9, Dune franchise star Josh Brolin returns to host SNL for the third time, with Ariana Grande also returning for the hat trick as the show's musical act.

Ashlee Simpson says infamous 'SNL' performance taught her how to say no

Dana Edelson/NBCU Photo Bank

In October 2004, Ashlee Simpson's music career was derailed after she was caught lip-syncing on an episode of Saturday Night Live. Looking back on the incident during a podcast interview, she says she should have stuck to her guns and refused to perform that night.

While appearing on Broad Ideas with Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen, Ashlee reveals that the day of the performance, she woke up unable to speak because of nodules on her vocal cords. She wrote a note to the SNL folks — because she couldn't talk — explaining the situation and insisting, "I will not go on. I don't care."

But, she claims, she was told to perform to prerecorded vocals. She warned SNL, "My band has never practiced this, this is not going to go well. I can’t do this.” But she did it anyway. Sure enough, when she started her second song, the vocal track from "Pieces of Me" started playing by accident, exposing her lip-syncing. Ashlee did a goofy dance and then walked offstage.

During the goodbyes, she attempted to explain herself, saying her band started playing the wrong song and that she was sorry.

On the podcast, Ashlee says she's since learned "the power of my no" and added, "The power of me saying 'absolutely not' ... that’s what I would go back and say.”

"It was a humbling moment for me, I had the #1 song ... it was, like, everything was about to go somewhere and then it was like, 'Woah,' the humility of not even [understanding] what grown-a** people would say about you ... awful, awful things," Ashlee continues. "It was so hard to tune that out, to find my strength, to get up and go again."
