Warming Shelters Are Now Open On Cold Nights

Cold weather is coming to the Ozarks.  Warming centers and shelters will be open for the homeless and less fortunate.  The warming shelters are open between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. from now thru March 1, if temps overnight are expected colder than 32 degrees.

Here is a list of those shelters for both men and women and families if you are in need.

East Sunshine Church of Christ 3721 E Sunshine 417-408-8076 Men’s Shelter open when the temperature is 32 degrees F or below. Call ahead to ensure there is space.
Grace United Methodist Church 600 S Jefferson 417-869-0765 Women’s Shelter open when the temperature is 32 degrees F or below. Call ahead to ensure there is space.
Asbury United Methodist Church 1500 S Campbell Ave 417-865-1335 Adult Shelter open when the temperature is 32 degrees F or below. Pets welcome. Call ahead to ensure there is space.
Unity Church of Springfield 2214 E Seminole St 417-887-2214 Adult Shelter open when the temperature is 32 degrees F or below. Call ahead to ensure there is space.
The Connecting Grounds 4341 W Chestnut Expy 417-986-2552 Family Shelter. Pets welcome. Call ahead to ensure there is space. Shelter open November 1-March 31.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church 1609 N. Summit Ave. 417-869-3646 Men’s Shelter open the two coldest nights of the week when the temperature is 32 degrees F or below. Call ahead to ensure there is space.
Revive 66 3839 W Chestnut Expy 417-894-1167 Adult Shelter. Pets Welcome. These are normally $10 to rent but are free on nights when the crisis cold weather shelters open.

Salvation Army's "Gifts of the Season Program" Is Underway!

The Salvation Army's "Gifts of the Season Program" begins today, November 8.  For those in need, its  FREE toys and food in Greene and Christian Counties.

Those who can participate must live in either Greene or Christian Counties with children 16 and younger, seniors 60 and older, or disabled people.

To participate this is what you'll need when you arrive at the Salvation Army in Springfield. (1707 W. Chestnut Expressway)

A photo ID.
Proof of address via a monthly bill from September, October, or November, a current lease, or Section 8 paperwork.
For the disabled, an award letter.

Documents will be accepted 9 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. on Nov 8-11 and Nov. 14-18.

If you are granted assistance,  the distribution dates will be Dec. 15 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. for families and Dec. 14 from 9 a.m.-noon for seniors and disabled people. You’ll get your appointment time when you sign up for the program.


Cold Weather Shelters Open This Month When Temps Are Below Freezing!

November first begins the opening of  "Crisis cold weather shelters," in Springfield!

If temps fall to 32 degrees or below for at least four consecutive hours between 7 pm and 7 am, the shelters will be open.

If you do not have shelter, or knows of someone needing shelter for the overnight, use one of the shelters listed below.

The  nine shelters are located at :

  • Asbury United Methodist Church, adult, pet-friendly shelter located at 1500 S. Campbell Ave.
  • East Sunshine Church of Christ, men's shelter located at 3721 E. Sunshine St.
  • Eden Village, located at 2801 E. Division St.
  • Grace United Methodist Church, women's shelter located at 600 S. Jefferson Ave.
  • Harbor House, men's shelter located at 636 Boonville Ave.
  • Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1609 N. Summit Ave.
  • Revive 66 Campground, located at 3839 W. Chestnut Expressway
  • The Connecting Grounds/Venues 425, located at 4341 W. Chestnut Expressway
  • Unity of Springfield, adult shelter located at 2214 E. Seminole St.

$3.00 Movies This Saturday For National Cinema Day

Movies are $3.00 this Saturday!  B&B Theaters, Alamo Drafthouse, AMC and Regal all will be participating in National Cinema Day. All movies will only be $3.00 for one day only September 3.

The event also aligns with the Labor Day weekend’s release of “Spider-Man: No Way Home, The More Fun Stuff Version! You may also watch the Invitation, Beast, Breaking, and Three Thousand Years of Longing  plus more.

Area Pools Will Close Soon!

We are one week out from Labor Day weekend. It's the "unofficial close" of summer and several area pools will also be closing for the year.

In Springfield, the Greene County Park board will have ONE pool open  for one last swim this year. Fassnight will be open on Labor day with a discount Splash and Sizzle. Gates open at 1-6:30 p.m. Admission is $1 or free with a canned food donation to benefit Ozarks Food Harvest. On September 6,  bring out the dogs for a Dog swim. You must register your dog before they will be allowed in the pool for a dip between 3:30 and 5pm. Register HERE

In Nixa- Currently the Nixa’s Aquatics Center is  operating under limited back-to-school hours and the last day open will be Labor Day. A  Doggie Dive is scheduled for Labor Day between 3:30-5 p.m.

Republic The Republic Aquatic Center closes Labor Day with pool hours noon-6 p.m.

Marshfield The  Aquatic Center will close Labor Day. Pool hours on Monday, Sept. 5 are noon-6 p.m.


New Andy’s Is Open Near MSU!

There is a new Andy’s in town! Just in time for school to begin at MSU!  The new Andy’s is located in the old National Art Shop location at the corner of Elm and National near the Missouri State University campus.

Enjoy great frozen custard and try the frozen MSU favorite named after MSU mascot Boomer the Bear!


New Girl Scout Cookie Coming in January!

Get ready Springfield! There is a new girl scout cooking coming to the Ozarks. Our mouths are watering already for the new Raspberry Rally! This super thin, crispy cookie has been infused with raspberry flavor and coated with a chocolate covering. It’s considered the “sister” cookie to the ever so popular Thin Mint.

Girl Scouts will sell door-to-door or to friends and neighbors in January.

In February, they will set up booths. The sales will continue through March.


Last Weekend To Enjoy Springfield Greene County Pools

This is the last weekend (other than Labor Day weekend) that the Springfield Greene County Pools will be open.
The pools open on Saturday are Fassnight, Meador, McGee-McGregor (free admission) and Chesterfield/Doling Indoor Pool.
On Sunday you can swim at Grant Beach, Silver Springs, Westport and Chesterfield/Doling Pools.
Fassnight: 1300 S. Campbell Ave.
Grant Beach: 1401 N. Grant St.
Meador: 2500 S. Fremont Ave.
McGee-McGregor: 1200 E. Bennett St.
Silver Springs: 1100 N. Hampton Ave.
Westport: 3100 W. Mt. Vernon St.

Fassnight, Grant Beach and Silver Springs: $4/ages 3-17 and seniors (60+), $5/adults. All ages are $1 or free admission with canned food donation every day after 5:30 p.m., and during Splash & Sizzle events.
McGee-McGregor Wading Pool: free admission, but this pool is for kids 6 and under only, with adults.

Check Your “Show Me Cash” Tickets!

Holy Smokes- Someone is $174,000 thousand dollars richer! Some one bought a Missouri “Show Me Cash” ticket at the Kum & Go at 1313 W. Battlefield St.

The winning ticket had a drawing date of July 29. No one has claimed the prize yet. Is it your ticket?

If it is your ticket, you must collect before January 25 2023 to claim your prize or it will be forfeited to the Missouri public education fund.

New Interactive Cooling Center Map For Springfield!

The high temps in Greene County and the surrounding areas are a dangerous situation. The Springfield-Greene County Health Department  has just created  a cooling center map so you can find a cooling center location near you.

The cooling centers are open for all people who do not have access to air conditioning and will be open during the “Heat Advisory”  Days.
